Show a promotion popup

Announce a sale or collect emails with a popup that opens as a visitor is about to leave. Set its languages, schedule, frequency and phone behavior.

A promotion popup is a simple message with an optional picture, a button, a row of your products and an email field. You fill in a form, check the preview, and publish. It is not built on the page-builder canvas, so there is nothing to lay out.

Create one

  1. Go to Appearance, then Popups, and choose New.
  2. Choose Promotion popup. (The other choice, Page-builder popup, lets you design the popup block by block.)
  3. Pick what it should do: promote something, collect emails, or both. Then write the headline and, if you like, the text, a picture from your media library, a button and a row of products.
  4. Choose when and where it shows, check the preview on the same screen, and press Publish.

A promotion popup stays off until you publish it. Saving a draft shows nothing on your site. Unpublish at any time to stop it.

Languages

Visitors see the popup in the language of the page they are on. If your store has Arabic, the editor asks for an Arabic headline and Arabic button text, and publishing waits until they are added. A popup with no Arabic headline is not shown on your /ar pages at all, rather than showing English text to an Arabic reader.

When it shows

  • A visitor is about to leave: the popup opens when the mouse pointer moves out through the top edge of the browser window. You can ask it to wait a number of seconds (0 to 60) after the visitor arrives, so it does not greet someone who has only just landed.
  • After a delay: a set number of seconds after the page opens (0 to 300).
  • After scrolling: once the visitor has scrolled a set share of the page (10 to 100 percent).

You can also limit it to every page, the home page only, or a list of pages. Write each page as a path such as /sale, or /sale/* for a page and everything below it.

Schedule

You can set a start and an end. The times use your store's time zone, shown next to the fields, not the visitor's and not your computer's. Leave both empty and the popup runs from the moment you publish until you unpublish it. This is how you set up a weekend sale in advance: schedule it, publish it, and it starts and stops on its own.

How often a visitor sees it

  • Once per campaign: a visitor sees it a single time.
  • Again after a number of days (1 to 365).
  • Once per visit: it can show again on the visitor's next visit.

Closing the popup counts as having seen it. Once a visitor clicks the button or signs up, the popup stops showing to that visitor for the current campaign, whichever frequency you chose.

Start a new campaign

If you want everyone to see the popup again, for example a second sale with the same popup, press Start a new campaign in the editor. Every visitor who closed or used the popup will see it again, whatever frequency you chose. Save your changes first, then start the new campaign.

Phones

Exit intent needs a mouse pointer leaving the window, and a phone has none. So a popup set to show when a visitor is about to leave does not show on phones unless you choose another rule for them. The editor will not let you save the popup with the phone setting left as Same as desktop in that case.

  • Do not show on phones.
  • After a delay: 10 to 120 seconds.
  • After scrolling: 20 to 90 percent of the page.

New promotion popups start with a delay of 20 seconds on phones. On a phone the popup rises from the bottom of the screen as a sheet instead of a centred window, and the visitor can still scroll the row of products and close it.

Where it never shows

Whatever you choose, a promotion popup never shows on the cart, checkout, order, account, sign-in or member pages, or in the admin area, so it cannot get in the way of a purchase.

What is tracked

VeloCMS does not add any tracking of its own for this popup, and the popup editor does not count views or clicks. If you have connected an analytics tool such as Plausible, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager or PostHog, the popup sends it four events: promo_popup_view, promo_popup_click, promo_popup_close and promo_popup_signup. Results appear in that tool. Where your visitors must give consent for analytics, the events only go out after they have.

To remember what a visitor has already seen, the popup saves a small flag in the visitor's browser (localStorage, or sessionStorage for the once-per-visit setting). It holds the campaign, when the popup was shown or closed, and whether the visitor used it. Nothing is sent to a server. Because it is stored on the visitor's device, mention it in your privacy policy.

Collecting emails: sign-ups go to the newsletter provider your store has connected, and whether subscribers receive a confirmation email depends on that provider's settings.
