Substack is brilliant at getting you started — but it also takes ten percent of every paid subscription, and the audience technically lives on their turf, not yours. So let's look at the alternatives for a paid newsletter in 2026, and then I'll build one live on VeloCMS, on my own domain.

Nobody wins every category, so here's the fair version. Beehiiv is strong on growth tools. Ghost gives you a newsletter with memberships and full ownership. And Substack itself is still the easiest place to just start. Where VeloCMS earns a look is when you want a paid newsletter and a real website underneath it.

Let's build it. Under Settings, then Membership, I add a paid tier — Insiders, seven dollars a month. That single tier is the paywall for your newsletter: paying readers get the members-only issues, everyone else gets the free ones. Name it, price it, done.

Here's the part that pays for itself. Payments run through your Stripe account, so VeloCMS takes zero percent of your subscriptions — you cover your plan and Stripe's standard fee, and that's it. On a thousand dollars a month, Substack's ten percent cut is a hundred dollars you keep instead.

Now write the issue. Open a new campaign, add your subject, and pick the audience — and look, you can send to everyone, free readers, or just your paid members. I'll choose Paid, so this one goes only to the people funding the work. Then send, or schedule it for morning.

And the whole thing sits on your domain, not a slash-your-name URL you're renting. Connect a custom domain — even the root, like your-name-dot-com — and your newsletter, your archive, and your paywall all live at your own address. That's the difference between owning an audience and borrowing one.

A paid newsletter, on your domain, with no platform cut — that's the whole pitch. Start your free trial at velocms dot org.
