Abandoned checkouts and reminder emails

See which checkouts were left unfinished, turn reminder emails on for your store, and learn exactly which carts are emailed and when.

Abandoned checkouts is a list of shoppers who started a checkout and did not finish it. Alongside it, VeloCMS can send those shoppers up to three reminder emails. Reminder emails are off until you turn them on for your store.

Where to find the list

Open Admin → Orders → Abandoned checkouts (the address is /admin/orders/abandoned). The list shows the checkouts VeloCMS could capture: signed-in members who started checkout, and guests who entered an email and agreed to updates. Checkouts that sit idle for an hour or more appear here.

  • Summary figures: Open abandoned checkouts, Potential value, Reminders sent, and Orders after a reminder (30 days). Carts in another currency are left out of the value, and a note says how many.
  • Two tabs: Abandoned, and Ordered after a reminder. The second tab lists orders placed within 72 hours after a reminder email.
  • Filters: search by email, a date range, and the reminder state (any, no reminder yet, reminder sent).
  • Each row shows the shopper, the items, the value, the last activity, the reminder progress (for example "Reminder 1 of 3 sent") and the region.

Select a row to open the detail page: the cart with quantities and prices, the first-captured and last-activity times, whether the shopper ticked marketing consent, whether that email has ordered since, and which of the 1 hour, 24 hour and 72 hour reminders were sent.

Turn reminder emails on

Go to Admin → Settings → Commerce and find Abandoned-cart recovery emails. Switch on Send abandoned-cart reminder emails. The section then shows "On since" with the date and time in UTC. Only the store owner can change this switch.

Only carts last active after you turn the switch on are eligible. Carts that were already idle before that moment are never emailed. If you switch it off and on again, the start moment is reset to the new time.

Which carts get an email

  • The shopper ticked the marketing-consent checkbox at checkout. A cart without that consent is listed, marked No marketing consent, and never emailed.
  • The cart was last active after the moment you turned reminders on.
  • The shopper has not unsubscribed from your emails. An unsubscribe made after the first reminder also stops the later ones.
  • Your store is active: no reminders are sent while it is read-only, suspended or being deleted.
  • The shopper has not placed an order since the cart was last saved. A completed order ends the sequence and the cart is marked Ordered since.

When the emails are sent

A scheduled job runs at the start of every hour. It measures how long a cart has been idle and sends the reminders in three stages: after 1 hour, after 24 hours and after 72 hours. Because the job runs hourly, a reminder goes out at the first run after its threshold, so it can arrive up to an hour late. At most one email is sent per cart in each run, and each stage is sent once per cart. Each email lists the cart and links back to checkout, and has an unsubscribe link.

Reading the results

The reminder progress on each row and the three stages on the detail page show what was sent. The Ordered after a reminder tab shows the orders that followed a reminder, so you can see which emails brought a shopper back. These figures are a record of what happened in your store, not a forecast.
