Choose your store currency
Pick the one currency your store sells in: the country suggestion, when the setting locks, how to change it, and which currencies can't be charged.
Every VeloCMS store sells in one currency. Product prices, the cart, checkout and order emails all use it. Prices are never converted from one currency to another, because VeloCMS has no exchange rate. This guide explains how the currency is chosen, when it can be changed, and which currencies cannot be used.
Where the currency comes from
During setup you can pick the country you are based in. VeloCMS then suggests a currency for it, for example the Israeli shekel (ILS) for Palestine, and you can choose another one before you continue. If you skip the country, nothing is chosen for you at that point.
A store with no chosen currency works it out from what it already has: first the currency of your products, then the currency of your memberships, and finally US dollars (USD). Go to Admin → Settings → Commerce and find the Store currency section to see which of these applies to you. The line at the top of the section says whether the currency was pinned, detected from your products, or is the default.
Choose or change it in Settings
- Go to Admin → Settings → Commerce and open the Store currency section. Only the site owner can change it.
- Open the Currency list. Currencies suggested for your country come first, followed by all the others.
- Pick a currency and press Save currency. The section says Store currency saved when it worked.
If your store already sells in one currency and you have never chosen one, the button reads Pin followed by that currency. Pinning makes it permanent instead of something VeloCMS infers from your products.
When the currency is locked
You can change the store currency only while no product is priced in a different currency. Drafts and archived products count too. If even one product is in another currency, the section shows a lock notice with the number of products and the currencies in use, and the plain save is refused. The same notice offers a button, Change currency and unpublish N products, that moves them all at once.
The reason is that changing the label on a price does not change its value. A product at 19.00 USD relabelled as 19.00 ILS would sell for far less than it is worth. You have two ways to move the store. Either re-price every product by hand in the new currency, then change the setting; or use the button: after you confirm the count, VeloCMS relabels every product that is in another currency, unpublishes them so none goes on sale at a wrong price, and sets the new store currency. The numbers are not converted, so check every price before you publish again. Orders you have already taken keep the currency they were placed in.
On the product form
Once the store currency is known, the product form shows it as read-only text with a link back to Settings → Commerce, instead of a list to choose from. A product saved in a different currency is refused with a message that names the store currency.
Currencies that cannot be charged
VeloCMS stores and charges prices in hundredths of the currency (cents). Currencies that do not divide into hundredths would be charged the wrong amount, so they are refused everywhere money is handled, rather than risk overcharging or undercharging a shopper.
- Three-decimal currencies: the Jordanian dinar (JOD), Kuwaiti dinar (KWD), Bahraini dinar (BHD), Omani rial (OMR), Iraqi dinar (IQD), Libyan dinar (LYD) and Tunisian dinar (TND).
- Zero-decimal currencies such as the Japanese yen (JPY) and the Korean won (KRW).
- Codes that are not real money, such as precious metals and test codes.
If you are based in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman or another country whose own currency cannot be charged, the setup suggests US dollars (USD) and says why. You can pick another currency from the list, but not your local one.
A product import that arrives in one of these currencies is saved as a draft with a warning, so you can set a supported currency and price before publishing.
Payment providers and your currency
Each payment provider accepts only certain currencies. Lahza takes ILS and USD only, and PayTR settles in Turkish lira. When your store currency does not suit a connected provider, its settings section shows a warning, and a provider that cannot take the currency refuses the payment at checkout. Check the provider's own list before you switch currencies.
What this setting does not change
- Memberships, gift cards and bookings keep the currency they are priced in. When your membership currency differs from your store currency, the section shows a notice.
- A saved price format was written for one currency. After you change the store currency, save the price format again under the same Commerce settings.
- No prices are converted. Every price stays exactly as you typed it.
