Members-only files: private PDFs, audio and video
Attach a PDF, audio or video file to a members-only post so only people who can read that post can open it. Images stay public.
A members-only post hides its page from people who are not signed in with the right membership. Files you upload to the Media library are different: they have public addresses, so anyone who has the link can open them. When you want a worksheet, recording or video that only your members can open, add it from the Members-only files panel on the post instead.
How to attach a file
- Open the post in the editor and save it once. The panel asks you to save first because each file belongs to a saved post.
- Set the post visibility to members or paid members.
- In the Members-only files panel, choose Upload file and pick a PDF, an MP4 or WebM video, or an audio file.
- Use Copy link to put the file address in your text, or Insert as download button to add a button to the post body.
Who can open the files
Anyone who can read the post can open its files, and nobody else. Access is checked each time a file is opened, so a member who cancels or drops below the post's tier loses access on their next request. If you set the post back to public, its files become openable by everyone, and the panel shows a note when that is the case. If the post is a draft or unpublished, only you can open the files.
Size limits and file types
- Documents (PDF): up to 10 MB.
- Audio and video: up to 500 MB.
- Images are not accepted in this panel. Images you add to a post are ordinary files with public addresses, so only publish photos you have the right to share.
Links expire
When a reader opens a file, VeloCMS checks their access and then hands out a temporary address. For documents it stops working after about 5 minutes, and for audio and video after about an hour so a player can keep seeking. A saved copy of that temporary address will not work later. Readers who still have access simply open the file again from the post.
This panel needs private file storage. If your install has not set it up, the panel says so and uploads are turned off.
