Discord Announcements

A rich Discord embed announces every article the moment you publish it

What it does

Discord Announcements keeps a channel current with your newest writing so nobody has to paste links. Each time a piece goes live, whichever way it got there (the editor, a bulk publish, the REST API or a scheduled run), one embed is delivered to the channel behind your webhook. The embed carries the article title as a clickable heading, the excerpt as its description when there is one, a footer reading Published via VeloCMS, and the publish time. The sender shows as VeloCMS with a blurple stripe, and the heading leads to the article on your verified domain or, failing that, your subdomain. A small Discord badge in the posts list records each attempt.

Who it's for

Community owners, newsletter writers and open-source maintainers who run a Discord server and want an announcements channel that fills itself. It suits anyone who can create a webhook on a channel, because that is all the setup there is. No bot has to be invited, no OAuth screen appears, and no role or permission on your server changes.

How it works

  1. In Discord, open the channel, then Edit Channel, Integrations, Webhooks, and choose New Webhook. Copy the webhook URL it gives you.

  2. Back in your admin, open the plugin, paste the URL and save. Only addresses on discord.com or discordapp.com with a path starting /api/webhooks/ pass the form.

  3. Publish a post. The plugin reacts to the switch into live and fires once for that article.

  4. The plugin posts a single embed, with the title, excerpt, link and timestamp, to your webhook address.

  5. Discord replies, and the result is saved with the article. If it failed, the message Discord sent back is kept so you can read it.

Settings you configure

Channel Webhook URL
Copied from Discord under Edit Channel, Integrations, Webhooks, New Webhook. It is stored as ciphertext and is not shown again. The URL is the entire credential, so treat it as a password.

What it can access

For each published article the plugin uses the title, slug, excerpt, publish time and your site ID, the latter to compose the link. Subscribers, orders, drafts and the full text are never touched. The only destination is the webhook address you saved, limited to discord.com and discordapp.com, and the field name alone marks it as a secret, so it is encrypted at rest.

Honest limits

  • An embed goes out when an article switches from draft to live. Later edits and re-saves are silent, and publishing again after an embed already went out does not repeat it.

  • Pieces published before the plugin was set up are not back-filled.

  • One webhook means one channel. There is no way to route different categories to different channels.

  • The excerpt is cut to 300 characters and ends with an ellipsis. Without an excerpt, the embed has no description at all.

  • The sender name VeloCMS, the footer text and the accent colour are fixed and cannot be changed in the settings.

  • The panel has no test button. A failure appears on the badge, and the Sync activity page offers a Retry sync button when Discord clearly refused the request. If the request went out but no clear answer came back, the plugin refuses to send again so as not to repeat the embed; check the channel and post by hand if it is missing.

  • Reader access is not checked, which means a members-only piece gets announced like the rest.

  • No image is attached to the embed, and nothing mentions a role or a person.

  • Unpublishing or deleting the article leaves the Discord message in place.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create a Discord bot?

No. The plugin uses a plain channel webhook, so there is no bot token, no OAuth sign-in and no server permission to grant. The only thing you hand over is the webhook URL.

What if I paste a wrong or deleted webhook address?

The form rejects anything that is not a discord.com or discordapp.com webhook address. If a valid-looking webhook has since been deleted in Discord, the attempt is recorded as failed with the message Discord replied with.

Will a Discord outage block my publishing?

No. The article is published regardless. Errors are caught inside the plugin and appear as a failed badge on the article.

Does it assign roles to members who subscribe?

No. This version only announces posts. Syncing Discord roles with membership tiers needs a bot, which is not part of this plugin.
