What it does
Rewardful runs affiliate programs on top of Stripe, and it learns about a sale by reading the Stripe checkout rather than through a separate API call. This plugin does the two pieces needed on your site. First, it can place Rewardful's tracking script on your public pages using your public tracking key, so a visitor who arrives through an affiliate link gets a referral ID in their browser. Second, when that visitor checks out from the cart, the referral ID is attached to the Stripe Checkout Session as its client_reference_id. Rewardful picks it up from Stripe and credits the right affiliate. Nothing is sent from your server to Rewardful directly, and no secret key is involved.
Who it's for
Shop owners who take payment with Stripe and run, or plan to run, a referral or partner program in Rewardful. You need a Rewardful account linked to the same Stripe account your store uses, plus the public tracking key from Rewardful's settings. It fits sellers whose buyers mostly purchase through the cart, since that is the path where the referral ID is passed along.
How it works
Turn on Enable Rewardful and paste your Tracking API Key from Rewardful, found under Settings and then API. The key is public, so there is nothing secret to protect.
With Emit tracking script automatically left on, Rewardful's script is added to your public pages. Because it sets a cookie, visitors in the EU, EEA and UK, or whose country is unknown, get it only after they accept the consent banner. Everyone else gets it straight away.
A visitor lands on your site through an affiliate's link. Rewardful's script notes the referral and makes its ID available in the browser.
When the visitor pays from the cart, the store reads that referral ID at the checkout button and adds it to the Stripe Checkout Session as client_reference_id.
Rewardful reads the completed Stripe checkout, matches the referral ID and records the commission for that affiliate in your Rewardful dashboard.
Settings you configure
- Enable Rewardful
- Off until you switch it on. Both the script and the checkout referral depend on this toggle.
- Tracking API Key
- The public key from Rewardful's API settings. It is placed in the script tag, so only letters, numbers, dashes and underscores are accepted for output.
- Emit tracking script automatically
- On by default. Switch it off if you already added Rewardful's script some other way. The referral is still passed to Stripe as long as the script is present on the page.
What it can access
The plugin stores your public Rewardful tracking key in your site settings and prints it into the Rewardful script tag on public pages. At cart checkout it reads the referral ID that Rewardful's script exposes in the visitor's browser and adds it to the Stripe Checkout Session. It makes no server calls of its own and reads no orders, members or posts.
Permissions
- Store your Rewardful tracking key (public, not secret)
- Inject the Rewardful referral UUID into Stripe checkout as client_reference_id
- Optionally emit the Rewardful tracking script on public pages

Honest limits
Only cart checkouts carry the referral. The direct buy links on single product pages create their Stripe session on the server, so affiliate sales through those links are not attributed.
Attribution works with Stripe Checkout only. Orders paid through PayPal, Lemon Squeezy or other payment options are not passed to Rewardful.
For visitors in the EU, EEA and UK, or whose country cannot be detected, the tracking script waits for Accept in the consent banner. Such a visitor who declines or ignores the banner is not tracked, so their purchase is not credited.
There is no test button. You confirm the setup by making a referred test purchase and checking that it appears in Rewardful.
Commission rules, payouts and affiliate sign-ups are all handled in Rewardful. The plugin only links a sale to a referral.
Frequently asked questions
Does the plugin call Rewardful's API?
No. Rewardful credits sales by reading Stripe, so the plugin only loads the browser script and puts the referral ID on the Stripe checkout. There are no server requests to Rewardful.
Is my Rewardful key a secret?
No. The tracking key is meant to sit in your page's HTML, much like an analytics ID. It is still stored and masked like other connector keys, for consistency.
I already installed Rewardful's script myself. What should I do?
Turn off Emit tracking script automatically so the script is not loaded twice. Keep Enable Rewardful on, because that toggle controls the referral ID sent to Stripe.
Why was a sale from a product page not credited?
The buy link on a single product page is prepared before the visitor clicks, so it cannot include the browser's referral ID. Purchases made through the cart are the ones that carry it.
