Series & Collections

Turn related posts into a numbered series readers can binge

What it does

Series and Collections lets you bundle posts into an ordered series such as a course, a multi-part guide or a build-in-public log. In the admin you create a series with a title and optional description, add posts, and put them in order. On the public site, every post that belongs to a series shows a box above the article saying Part of a series, with the series title, a label such as Part 2 of 5, a numbered list of every part with the current one marked You are here, and links to the previous and next installments. Your posts themselves are not changed.

Who it's for

Writers who publish in installments: tutorials that build on each other, interviews run over several weeks, long investigations split into chapters, or newsletters with a running theme. It gives a reader who lands on part three a way to find parts one and two, and a reason to keep reading afterwards. If every post you write stands alone, you have no use for it.

How it works

  1. Open Series under the Publishing group of your admin menu and press New series. Give it a title, an optional slug and a short description. If you leave the slug empty it is made from the title.

  2. Expand the series, press Add post and pick an existing post from the list. New posts are placed at the end. Move parts up or down to set the order, or remove one.

  3. A reader opens any post that belongs to a series. While the page is built, the plugin finds the series, loads every part in order and works out the previous and next installments.

  4. The series box appears above the article. Published parts are links. A part that is still a draft is shown greyed out as plain text, so readers can see it is coming.

Settings you configure

Title
The name shown at the top of the series box and in the admin list.
Slug
Lowercase letters, digits and hyphens. Optional. When empty it is generated from the title.
Description
Optional. A short summary that appears under the title in the series box, cut to two lines.

What it can access

The plugin stores your series and the order of posts in your own site's database, and reads the title, address and status of the posts you add. It makes no network calls and sends nothing to outside services. Creating, editing and deleting series needs a signed-in editor or higher on your site. Visitors only receive the finished navigation box for the post they are reading.

Honest limits

  • A post can belong to more than one series, but only one series box is shown on it.

  • There is no public page that lists all your series. The series exists as the box on each member post.

  • The words Part of a series and You are here are fixed English text in the box, whatever the language of your site.

  • Part numbers are positions in the full list, drafts included, so a series of four with one unpublished entry still reads of 4 on every post.

  • Deleting a series removes only the grouping. Your posts are kept.

  • Ordering is manual. Posts are not sorted by publish date for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does adding a post to a series change the post?

No. The grouping is kept separately from your posts, so removing a post from a series, or deleting the series, leaves the post exactly as it was.

What does a reader see for a part I have not published yet?

The title appears in the list, greyed out and not clickable. If the post has no title yet the list reads Coming soon. The previous and next links only point at published posts.

Can I reorder parts after publishing?

Yes. Move a part up or down in the admin and the numbering on every post in the series updates the next time those pages are built.

Can the same post be added to a series twice?

No. The admin refuses to add a post that is already in that series, and tells you so.
