Table of Contents

A jump-to-section outline for every long post, built from its headings

What it does

Table of Contents reads the headings you already wrote and turns them into a short outline above the body of each blog post. Every entry is a link to its section, nested by heading level, and the outline sits in a bordered box titled On this page. You choose whether it shows numbers, bullets or no markers. While a reader scrolls, the section currently near the top of the screen is shown in bolder text. You write nothing extra. The plugin reads the editor's saved content first and falls back to the stored HTML, skips headings with no text, and gives repeated headings distinct anchors so each link lands on the right one. A post with no headings in range simply shows no box.

Who it's for

Writers of long guides, tutorials, documentation-style posts and research write-ups, where readers arrive from search wanting one particular answer and should reach it without scrolling through everything. It also helps people who skim before they commit to reading. If most of your posts are short notes with a single heading or none, you will rarely see it appear and can leave it uninstalled.

How it works

  1. Install the plugin, choose the deepest heading level to include, from second-level headings only down to fourth-level headings, and pick a list style.

  2. Write the post as usual with headings. Nothing is added to the post itself: the outline is generated each time the post page is rendered, from the saved headings.

  3. The plugin collects the headings in order, nests the deeper ones under their parent, and gives each a link anchor. The same anchor is placed on the heading in the rendered article, so the jump lands exactly on it.

  4. The theme draws the outline above the article body. As the reader scrolls, the entry for the section being read turns bolder.

Settings you configure

Maximum Heading Depth
Choose H2 only, H2 to H3, or H2 to H4. Deeper headings than your choice are left out of the outline. The default is H2 to H3.
Style
Numbered shows an ordered list, Bulleted puts a bullet beside each entry, and Minimal shows a plain indented list with no markers. The default is Bulleted.

What it can access

The plugin reads the content of the blog post being displayed, which means its headings and nothing else about the post. It makes no network calls, writes nothing to your database and touches no member, order or payment data. It runs on the server while the page is built, and the reader's browser only receives the finished outline.

Honest limits

  • It appears on blog posts only. This plugin adds nothing to static pages.

  • The box heading, On this page, is fixed English text and is not translated with the rest of a bilingual post.

  • The list is a plain linked outline and is not pinned to the side of the screen as a reader scrolls. With the Numbered style, each nested level starts again at 1 instead of reading 1.1, 1.2.

  • Only headings in the post body count. Text that is merely bold or large, without being a heading, does not appear.

  • If a post has no headings within the depth you chose, nothing is shown, not even an empty box.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to add anchors or IDs to my headings myself?

No. The plugin generates a link target for every heading it lists and the article body carries the matching target, so the links work without any manual step.

Why is my outline missing a heading I can see in the post?

Either its level is deeper than the maximum depth you chose, or it has no text. Raise the depth in the plugin settings and the heading is included.

What happens if two headings have the same wording?

Each gets its own anchor, with a number added to the repeats, so a link to the second Summary does not jump to the first one.

Can I show the outline with numbers?

Yes. Set Style to Numbered in the plugin settings. Bulleted is the default, and Minimal removes the markers altogether.

Can I show the outline on a regular page instead of a post?

Not with this plugin. It is wired into the blog post template only. For a page you build yourself, link to your sections by hand.
