Google Analytics 4

GA4 from a Measurement ID, with a consent step for EU and UK visitors

What it does

This plugin puts the Google Analytics 4 tag on the public pages of your blog. You paste a Measurement ID and the plugin adds a small snippet to the head of each page. That snippet first tells Google that analytics and ad storage are denied by default. It then loads gtag.js from googletagmanager.com and starts tracking only once consent is settled. For visitors in the EU, the wider EEA and the UK, that means after they press Accept All on the cookie banner. For visitors elsewhere, the tag loads straight away and the banner stays hidden. Your reports live in your own Google Analytics account, not inside VeloCMS.

Who it's for

Bloggers and small publishers who already have, or are happy to create, a Google Analytics 4 property and want its standard reports for their VeloCMS site. It suits you if you want a ready cookie banner for European visitors without wiring one yourself. If you would rather avoid cookies altogether, a cookie-free tool such as Plausible or Fathom is a closer match.

How it works

  1. You paste your GA4 Measurement ID, which starts with G-, into the plugin settings and save. The form checks the format, and the tag is only added for a saved value that passes the same check.

  2. On every public page the plugin adds a head snippet that sets Google Consent Mode to denied by default. This step only queues a setting. It sends nothing to Google and writes no cookie.

  3. A visitor in the EU, EEA or UK sees the cookie banner. Accept All loads gtag.js and starts tracking. Reject All keeps the tag switched off.

  4. A visitor from anywhere else, judged by the country Cloudflare reports, sees no banner. The tag loads as soon as the page is ready in the browser.

  5. Page views then show up in your Google Analytics property, where you read the reports.

Settings you configure

Measurement ID
Starts with G- followed by letters and numbers. Found in Google Analytics under Admin, Data Streams, your stream. The form refuses a value in the wrong format, and a saved value in the wrong format adds no tag.

What it can access

The plugin does not read your posts, members or orders. It only needs your Measurement ID. In your visitors' browsers it loads gtag.js from www.googletagmanager.com. The plugin's manifest also lists www.google-analytics.com, where Google's own script sends measurements. Google receives visitor data for your property under its own terms. Pressing Accept All on the banner grants Google's analytics and advertising signals together, with no separate choice for each.

Honest limits

  • You stay responsible for your own consent duties and privacy policy. The plugin does not make a site compliant with GDPR or any other law.

  • Whether the banner shows depends on the visitor's country from the Cloudflare header. Outside the EU, EEA and UK the tag loads without asking, and the banner text is the platform default. When no country is reported, the banner is shown.

  • The banner offers Accept All and Reject All only. There is no way to accept analytics but refuse advertising signals.

  • One Measurement ID per site. There are no settings for custom events, filters or excluding your own visits. Configure those inside Google Analytics.

  • VeloCMS does not show your Google Analytics numbers. Reports are read in Google's own interface.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Analytics load before a visitor accepts?

For visitors in the EU, EEA and UK, no. Only the denied-by-default Consent Mode setting is queued, with no request to Google and no cookie from this snippet. gtag.js loads after Accept All. For visitors elsewhere it loads without asking.

Do I need to add a cookie banner myself?

No. Once a Google Analytics Measurement ID is saved, VeloCMS shows its own banner to EU, EEA and UK visitors. Banner wording and the Accept All and Reject All choices are the platform defaults.

Where do I find my Measurement ID?

In Google Analytics, open Admin, then Data Streams, pick your web stream and copy the Measurement ID at the top. It starts with G-.

Does using this plugin make my site GDPR compliant?

No. It gates its own tag behind the consent banner, but your privacy policy, your other scripts and your legal basis remain yours to manage.
